so i know i've been terrible at updating, but my life has been far too busy (with work, socializing, and general living) to even think of a blog. i have so much to tell, but it needs to wait. i have a few really important clothing updates, and the most important one is coming soon. let me just give you a teaser right now: it involves a bag that retails for over $1,000 that will be falling beautifully in my lap this weekend and that will remain on my arm for as long as my heart sees fit, i.e. forever. also, there's some gareth pugh, horace, the next big jewelry designer (dilan walpola), and a few more that will be featured on my own body in my next big editorial/expose post. lots of stories, lots of pictures, and hopefully some erin. be excited, and i hope the lives of anyone who actually reads this have been just as beautiful and exciting as my own.

so i spent like 9 hours yesterday in soho. doing what, you ask? starbucks, starbucks, jamba juice and, oh yeah, SHOPPING. i spent, umm... just a little bit too much, but hey, i came here with almost exclusively winter clothing! it's been like 85 since i got here! anyway, just enjoy the mesh of this great fully mesh vintage shirt i bought, and there's a uniqlo shirt underneath. for the culmination of the shopping time photos, you're going to have to wait for tomorrow! THEN, you'll get to see what i bought at SEVEN!

well, to take a break from packing and listening to empire state of mind way too many times i decided i'd take way too many photobooth pictures to show off my new shirt! you know how when you are looking to buy something nothing ever seems to work, and when you know you shouldn't buy anything you always find something perfect?? well, it happened. picked this wonderful new addition up at lenny and me in wicker park, and don't tell anyone, but it's past-season-zara! isn't it great?! you can't tell from the pictures, but it's actually pretty sheer, and made of flax! it's a step in the right direction (that direction being all white all summer). also, it looks great with the cuffs i made for the last saddle tramps collection show! whaddaya think?!

and i leave for new york the day after tomorrow!! AHHH!! i'm so excited, although i'll really miss erin. like, a serious lot.

my good luck charm for the summer is my new surface to air bag!! i love it. i've been looking for the perfect flat leather bag for a long time, and one just happened (well, not really) to fall right into my lap (i.e. the vestibule where packages are left downstairs)!! and just so you know, it's made from the softest, nicest leather and has an equally soft flannel lining!! love love love it!! and if you aren't familiar with surface to air, make sure you check out their website. they've been on my radar for a while now, and i'm really happy to own a piece from them and to see what wonderful craftmanship goes into what they do.

looks great with the chloe sevigny for opening ceremony shoes, no?

and this is how i will clutch it when approached by fashion-conscious bums at 3am on the train.

SO, i've been completely neglectful to this blog, and i'm sure there are plenty of digital tumbleweeds filled with unnoticed yawns blowing around in here. BUT, i've decided to do my favorite thing ever and change the direction of the blog again. MOSTLY, because i just got the exciting news that i'll be working at slow and steady wins the race in new york all summer!! SO, you'll get to read about all the fun things i do while getting lost in manhatten trying to find my way to the production factories!! ANNNYWAY, this is about to be the REAL real world brooklyn (stolen idea from carmen! because we'll both be there!!!). i bet you just can't wait for me to leave! well it's going to be about a month before it happens. maybe i'll post something before then, maybe not. oh yeah, did i mention i've been fucking busy? well, if not, i've been fucking busy. you'll see the fruits of that labor soon enough.

here are the outfit pictures promised to you a few days ago. this is us before going to the show at heaven that was.... uhhmmm..... not as interesting as what we wore. i also managed to snap a couple of pictures of the elusive carmen! she doesn't like to be in focus, but i got one good one (maybe because i was in the shot, i'm that vain!). and look how much better i'm getting at this modeling thing!!! check those poses!

i'm not totally sure what carmen is wearing, but the necklace is by erin. her jewelry is amazing and makes the best jingling sounds as you move and walk. as if i needed more attention (i always do)!! i know that much! and i already gave you the deetz of my outfit for that night.

it suddenly became spring in chicago, and it will be for the next couple of days!! SO, i thought it was time to bust out the comme des garcons for h&m pants that i love so much (but that provide so little protection from the weather!). don't get me wrong, i love to irrationally rationalize the (in)appropriate nature of clothing. i wore these pants all last winter under the pretense of "but they're wool! they are totally warm enough!!" alas, they are not. BUT, they are happening now that we are above the 35 degree mark. also wearing: slow and steady wins the race leather t-shirt (one of the best purchases EVER), my dead step-grandfather's old perfect oatmeal cardigan, h&m blazer, and my favorite winter staple shoe - combat boots straight from the army surplus! ohh yeah, and carmen's wonderful portrait of charles manson.... who we have a (some might think creepy) fondness for in this apartment. i mean, he's such a dreamboat and his music is beautiful! anyway, we are now off to an opening at kokorokoko, so maybe we'll get some great (post-worthy) pictures there. as always, pictures by carmen.

i told you it would be coming. these are a couple of outfits, but i figure they can be lumped into one post, because obviously it's all about the jacket! and the fact that i have creepy leg protrusions because of those pants..... hmmmm...... anyway, jacket is by ME! , shirts aren't important (really!), drapey vest in the first picture by erin, levi's jeans (gifted by the company (KIDDING! who do you think i am, tavi???)), and my favorite canadian police boots that are a bit too small and are deforming my feet. too bad, i lurve them. ohh, and that mickey's 40 is by tyler... like, he bought it. i've yet to receive an email confirming the shipment of my exciting new gift to myself... so i don't know if i'll get it by saturday for the fashion show at heaven... but i hope so. i mean, i'll obviously be the best dressed person there (with the exception of you guys!), but i want to be even more best dressed than the rest! okay, it's early, i'm tired, my coffee headache that i got on the train (apparently my body cannot even wait 30 minutes after i get up for caffeine anymore!) is just starting to fade, and i am far too excited about my office workweek being over after today! anyway, the beautiful pictures are by the beautiful carmen, so read her blog!

EDIT: oh man, i just looked at my blog after posting this and realized i need some serious model coaching!! how can i be so rigid in telling others how they should pose when i have no idea what to do myself??? i guess that's why i'm a designer and not a model!

okay, so i read the sartorialist, but i don't necessarily agree with his taste much of the time. don't get me wrong, men in perfectly fitted suits or with just the right amount of cuffing on shirts, pants, or whatever is a beautiful thing. THAT SAID, men who are simply old and wearing really odd things like green felt large brimmed hats are not that exciting in my book. AGAIN, THAT SAID, this is ideal:

the color (what color? (I KNOW!!)) palette, the (THE) shoes, just the right amount of bundled up... perfect.

ANNNND, i know i know i know i said i'll be doing more outfit posting, but that is just as soon as carmen and i can set aside 1 minute every day so she can take my picture. i mean, how can i settle on using my camera when there are now two, yes TWO in the house that are far superior to my old canon rebel from the stone age of DSLRs??

soooooooo my obsession with gareth pugh has hit a new high this season. he made amazing, completely wearable clothing that changed his usual silhouette a bit, but kept his vision. AND, the clothing is all beautiful!! i am obsessed with the jackets he sent down the runway, especially the leather ones a la this:

seriously, i like it MORE than a rick owens leather jacket. my goal in life of having a rick owens leather jacket has been REPLACED by the goal to have this one!! now, i could go completely insane posting pictures, but i will not, because any self-respecting person will not just read a blog about this show, but will seek out any pictures possible. i highly recommend looking at the style.com pictures first, then checking these pictures posted on dazed that show things from different angles. ALSO, the fact that the finale music was the cranberries (as heard on diane's blog) makes this show extra fucking perfect. bahh, i am basking in this.

SO, new york fashion week has been happening, despite the fact that i have been so busy in school that i haven't been keeping up with it!! but, today i am in the office and fully prepared to do some serious catch-up. right off the bat, i have three shows that have made me pretty happy. first, and most predictably, alexander wang. at the beginning of the show i wasn't really feeling it, but by the end he had me convinced, as usual, of his great design skill. i've limited myself to three images from each designer, so check his three out!

next, OBVIOUSLY, is rodarte! they are always great, and have continued on with what they do best. they destroyed everything and put it back together in perfectly calculated chaos. what can i say? i love them. AND, i always appreciate a designer who will go black for summer. ALSO, despite the fact that i hate black and red together, they did it and i loved it. i actually really loved everything that came down the runway. and really, how often does that happen? i'll shut up and you just look and enjoy.

last, but certainly worth mentioning is the fairly new design duo of ohne titel. i didn't love everything they put out (as that is pretty impossible for a designer to do that for me), but they did some really great stuff for this season. these are pieces that are interesting enough for the runway, but still something that would be wearable on a day-to-day basis. anyway, i think these newcomers will (or at least should) be around for a while, and i can't wait to see what they will do in future seasons.

also, my first design assignment for shane's class is a collection of denim skirts. my first reaction was uncontrolable vomitting, but i've gotten over it and decided that maybe, just maybe, and that's a HUGE MAYBE, i can make good denim skirts. we shall see.

oh yeah, school has started, leaving less time for blogging. so, i will no longer be completely filling anyone's feed! sorry!

there is a great article about the olsens in the nyt today (READ IT), in which they mention the fact that for its upcoming collection the row will produce menswear! i love the jacket above, and if the menswear is anything like this then i cannot wait to go to barney's to cry about the fact that i cannot buy it, and fight the urge to run out of the store wearing it (which is what happens every time i go to try on some rick owens...). these two have always been pretty brilliant, so i'm surprised they didn't start with menswear sooner, as it seems to be a very important route while men of the world finally start enjoying fashion.

then, i visited their website and found clothing that was BETTER than the lookbook images, such as this amazing shirt:

the pricepoint of these clothes aren't very high (in the $200's and $300's range), but ufortunately they are still out of my reach! maybe they'll start stocking them over at hejfina and then they'll go on massive sale... but it's doubtful.

my mother an i have been exchanging emails all day (as always), but today we have been pretty focused on the CIA controversey. our different reactions to the situation brought us to the topic of generational changes in idealism. she believes (as do i) that my (our, for those of you reading) generation has grown up with the belief that the world is so fucked that nothing will ever really be okay. this then brought on this ramble about gregg araki that i sent to her:

"yeah, this topic is precisely what my favorite director (gregg araki) has used as a basis for his film making career. his best films are from a trilogy (consisting of the films totally fucked up, the doom generation, and nowhere) that he has unofficially called the "teen apocalypse trilogy." basically, what they all end up saying is that we (my generation) have grown up feeling as if we are all hopeless and that we truly believe that we are going to see the end of the world. this has lead us to only attempt to make ourselves happy, generally through relationships and drugs. however, because we feel we are doomed (and remember, we are only trying to please ourselves) these relationships are actually only about sex and self-fulfillment and/or pleasure. and the drugs: well, we all know that drugs are for recreation, NOT fulfillment. basically, then, we continue on cycling because obviously neither of these attempts is working, but we continue striving because we don't know what else to do. however, we never do anything whole-heartedly because we still have the belief in the backs of our minds that we are simply going to experience the end of the world one of these days. so, we are trapped in a half-assed cycle of attempted happiness through personal pleasure.

many critics dismiss araki because his films appear to be poorly acted re-creations of 90's youth in LA. however, he uses great actors who obviously have been directed to act like spoiled nihilists with shallow fronts (i.e. 90's youth in LA). i personally think that he has perfectly captured the true spirit of my generation: essentially hopeless and entirely self-centered, with the understanding that if we stray from this path we will be eternally miserable. the ephemeral is all that will make us happy, so we best keep moving."

nowhere is obviously araki's masterpiece, so you all need to see it! unfortunately, it is unavailable on dvd; fortunately, it is on my computer and basically the only people who are reading this live with me and can watch it whenever you want!

let's see, designers who we are missing: RICK OWENS!!, ann demeulemeester (!!!), gareth pugh (well, this one is understandable, I GUESS, but really, he helped shape this decade and generation!), and balmain (along with quite a few i'm sure i'm not listing).

i mean, yes, ralph lauren is important, but he did not help to shape style in the last 10 years the way ANY of these others designers did.

and as far as icons, i'm just surprised no bloggers made it on the list. let's talk about who changed the way people look at and think about fashion for a second. how many views do the top bloggers get per day? a fucking lot. we all know who they are, i don't need to name names. but really, how many people are still complaining that stylebytes no longer posts???

but, i'm still excited to get it. they did a pretty good job, i just don't think it is perfectly representative of the last few years.

so i was just on the seven new york website, and i found another new favorite menswear brand to add to my list!! damir doma is just plain great, so check him out! these are what i would like for the upcoming fall (if everything wasn't sold out!!).

cut-out bomber!!! YES.

semi-dropped crotch shorts (yeah, i plan on wearing shorts this fall... and into the winter if i'm so bold, which i won't be.)

these are just basic (not from any specific designer), and would be necessary. could find them anywhere, and i will need to for this brutal winter coming up... they'd be nice under shorts/rolled up pants, right?

my new favorite menswear designer is robert geller. after months of lusting after a shirt of his at hejfina i tried it on one final time and had to buy it. today, after repeated trips to the mirror to admire myself in it, i looked him up, only to find out that the rest of his stuff is just as amazing! really, i am putting him up with my gaggle of favorite menswear designers (like ann, rick, and rad). anyway, see for yourself, this stuff is an assortment of his last three seasons:

maiko takeda makes the best accessories!!! what a brilliant idea. i am really impressed with the fact that he punches all of the holes by hand. i'm sure this could be easily done with a machine, but i appreciate the effort. if he decides to stop using metal then these could be laser-cut and seriously produced. we'll see what the future holds for him!

i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE (keep going for a while) nakkna. seriously. in a realitivly rare move, it is a TRIO that designs this beautiful clothing. unfortunately, they are based in sweden, so not speaking their language (and only about half of the website is in english) makes it impossible to attempt a purchase from their online store. seriously, go to their website, though. i do not love EVERY piece, but some of them blow me away!! it is some of the most beautiful design work i have seen in a long time. i love it in black, but the color incarnations are just as great!! i cannot rave about them enough. it's great, great work. also, it further encourages my desire for menswear at womenswear lengths (i.e. short dress length shirts like the one pictured and my soon-to-be-owned complex geometries shirt i posted about the other day).

rodarte is so good, and you know this collaboration will be so bad, as the target ones always are. why oh why can't they do h&m, where the price point could be higher, thus giving them the freedom to make, uhm, the designs that this duo is all about?! i just hate that target has to do this. the designs are always so watered down that they don't even resemble the designers that they are "by." i mean, we all remember the McQ incident. i just hope that h&m can get another GOOD designer to sign on. i mean, really, matthew williamson, come on! comme des garcons was so fucking good, i wish i bought more. although, i get great use of those pants still. okay, ramble ramble ramble, the point is that i love rodarte and i hate the "for target" collaborations. i refuse to look at it. i mean, "knee highs" and a "leopard print dress," just kill me know.

karin bubaš is an amazing artist based in vancouver. she currently has an amazing exhibition up at the charles h. scott gallery in said city. she made these soft, seriously emotional pastel portraits of the "stars" of the hills. brilliant, right?!

she is also a truly amazing photographer. please check out her website, she has done some amazing work, some of my favorite being from her exterior studies at night series.

okay, there is NOTHING funny about human rights violations taking place in congo... but seriously, the writer of this article in the NYT tried really hard to make it hilarious with quotes such as:

ATO (a japanese label whose website i cannot seem to locate (??)) does some really great work. i mean, it's not amazing, but it's pretty much a stylists dream. it's a bunch of pieces that would be really great if mixed with other designers' work. i like the women's better than the men's... probably a lot to do with the fact that the shoes on the men are fucking awful, but still... some good stuff. sorry, i haven't had even close to enough coffee today to put out any sort of functional sentences.

asger juel larsen is a menswear designer from the LCF class of 2009. i love the idea of making chain mail out of leather and rubber, creating a new kind of knitwear. anyway, this styling of his lookbook is a little bit dramatic, but i would definitely love to own some of these pieces... they could (if on some guy without dyed black hair, eyeliner, and piercings!!) look really amazing, i think. how about youuu??

i am completely in love with complex geometries. seriously, LOVE. i tried a couple of pieces on at robin richman, but the only pieces they had were women's t-shirts, and they were a bit too feminine. that said, i am buying the square hood-t (the last image) later today if i can get my finances straight.... at $96, how can i say no?! plus, a piece like that is an investment. well, that's what i like to tell myself every time i buy anything new.
